Did Israel Commit War Crimes in Gaza?
Did Israel Commit War Crimes in Gaza?
Background and Context
A quote from Spiegel Online article, "Did Israel Commit War Crimes in Gaza?" by Thomas Darnstädt and Christoph Schult, 2009-01-26:
Each new image of destroyed residential buildings and every mother's complaint about the killing of her children puts Israel under growing pressure. Was the scale of the Israeli attacks justified? Did the Israelis take sufficient steps to protect the innocent? Were aid organizations prevented from evacuating civilians?
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who visited the Gaza Strip last week, called for a "full investigation," Amnesty International is accusing Israel of "war crimes," and Louis Michel, the EU's commissioner for aid to developing countries, says: "It is evident that Israel does not respect international humanitarian law."

Did Israel Commit War Crimes in Gaza? -- Work In Progress
YES: Israel Did Commit War Crimes in Gaza
>>Israel targetted civilians and civilian infrastructure during the Gaza War.
>>Israeli forces engaged in "wanton destruction" of Palestinian homes during the recent conflict in Gaza.
-- According to human rights investigators
>>"Unless those operating on the ground felt not just 100% but 200% secure - that the places were not booby trapped, that they wouldn't come under fire - they could not have got out of the vehicles.
They would not have used that method
[of anti-tank mines. Troops would have had to leave their armoured vehicles to plant them and rig up the detonators].
The use of the method tells us even more that there wasn't the kind of danger that might have made it lawful to destroy some of those properties."
-- Donatella Rovera, the head of the Amnesty International fact-finding mission to southern Israel and Gaza
>>"From the testimonies that we've gathered, lots of demolitions - buildings demolished either by bulldozers or explosives - were done after the area was under Israeli control."
-- Yehuda Shaul, member of Breaking the Silence, an Israeli group that gathers and circulates the testimonies of Israeli soldiers, told BBC News
>>Israel used ammunition that causes particularly horrible injuries.
>>Israel used ammunition that contained depleted uranium.
>>Israel fired 20 white phosphorus grenades, in violation of military regulations, into residential areas in the northern Gaza Strip.
>>Israel used so-called Dense Inert Metal Explosive (DIME) bombs.
>>Wanton destruction on a large scale would qualify as a war crime."
-- Donatella Rovera, the head of the Amnesty International fact-finding mission to southern Israel and Gaza
>>Israel blocked medical and humanitarian assistance to civilians during the Gaza War.
>>NO: Israel Did NOT Commit War Crimes in Gaza
