Panama Looks at Drug Trafficking
2009-01-17 (Saturday),
Inside Costa Rica
Panama - The design of strategies to face drug trafficking focuses Friday the summit of heads of State from Panama, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico, in a hotel at the outskirts of the capital.
According to sources from the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the official agenda includes exchange among statesmen this afternoon. Authorities have confirmed the presence of Mexico's President Felipe Calderon, Colombia's Alvaro Uribe, Guatemala's Alvaro Colom, as well as his host Martin Torrijos.
Panamanian Foreign Minister Samuel Lewis said the meeting will adopt guidelines in the struggle against drug trafficking and organized crime.
As part of the event, representatives from public safety, police investigation and migration have been meeting since Thursday.
Groups of experts have discussed monitoring, capture and trial of those who commit a crime through drug trafficking in those countries.
Another aim of the meeting is to achieve a firm, decisive step in the coordination of efforts to fight organized crime, international crime, and drug trafficking.
