Sarkozy, Calderon discuss fight against organized crime, economic crisis

Visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday met with his Mexican counterpart Felipe Calderon and discussed various issues including fighting organized crime and the global financial crisis.

Sarkozy, who is on a three-day visit, hailed the ongoing campaign by the Mexican government to fight drug trafficking and organized crime in the country, and said his country will offer support to the "brave and determined combat."

The people "do not expect talk, but facts, actions and results," Sarkozy said.

A war targeting organized crime and drug trafficking was launched in the country when Calderon assumed office in late 2006,during which thousands of policemen and soldiers were deployed in the most affected states. But the results so far have not been as good as expected.

The French president also mentioned "the perfect union" between the two countries, saying that "they were starting a new journey together."

Calderon said both countries "must unite efforts to achieve a safer world" where their governments coordinate "with efficiency to stop transnational organized crime."

Both countries must "work together to face the great challenges of humanity" like the financial crisis and the consequences of climate change, he said.

Mexico wishes to be "an actor, not an audience in the transformation of the world," Calderon said.

The two leaders also discussed bilateral cooperation in environmental protection, education and technology, and signed several financial agreements.

Sarkozy arrived in Mexico City on Sunday, accompanied by his wife, Carla Bruni.
