Indian PM may meet Pakistani President at backdrop of BRIC meeting

2009-06-13 (Saturday), People's Daily Online
India Friday said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may meet Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari at the backdrop of the BRIC meeting in Russia next month.

The BRIC nations -- Brazil, Russia, India and China -- will hold a summit meeting on June 16 in Russia's Yekaterinburg. One day before that, a summit meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will also be held there and it will be participated by leaders of observer countries including India and Pakistan.

"There is a possibility of a meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari in Russia on the sidelines of BRIC summit," Indian Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon told the media.

However, he declined to refer to the subject the two world leaders might discuss, saying, "I don't want to guess what they will discuss."

Expressing the need for proper steps against terrorists operating on Pakistani soil and acting against India before the resumption of the composite dialogue, Menon said, "We need an atmosphere for dialogue and for that, it is necessary that certain steps are taken by them. India and Pakistan are in constant touch with each other and we watch each others' statements very carefully."

India suspended composite dialogue with Pakistan after the Mumbai attacks last November, which killed around 170 people.
