Medvedev expects Petersburg forum to offer anti-crisis solutions

2009-06-04 (Thursday), RIA Novosti
The Russian president expects participants in the three-day International Economic Forum starting on Thursday in St. Petersburg to offer solutions for overcoming the economic crisis.
In an interview with CNBC ahead of the forum, Dmitry Medvedev said: "I would like those addressing the forum... to try to answer the most practical questions worrying everybody today."
He said the issues relate to the performance of the global economy and national economies, the adequacy of measures to support national economies and counteract protectionism, and ways out of the crisis.
The president also said the credit crunch has demonstrated how interdependent economic systems across the globe are.
The Russian leader will take an active part in the St. Petersburg forum, addressing the first plenary session and attending discussions on oil prices. He will also meet with representatives of the world's top 20 energy companies, bankers and businessmen on Friday.
On the sidelines of the forum, Medvedev will meet with his Finnish counterpart Tarja Halonen on Friday to discuss the project to lay the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea, Russia-EU cooperation and the initiative to draft a European security pact.
"During the talks, Medvedev and Halonen will discuss Russian-Finnish partnership and prospects for its development, practical issues related to bilateral economic contacts and the implementation of joint projects in the sphere of transportation, timber production and power engineering," Kremlin aide Sergei Prikhodko told reporters earlier.
"In the context of energy dialogue, cooperation within the Nord Stream project will be a priority," he said.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signaled on Wednesday that participants in the Nord Stream project were ready to alter the route in line with Finland's environmental concerns.
