Lebanese Sunni majority leader met Shiite Hezbollah Chief

2009-06-26 (Friday), People's Daily Online
Lebanese Sunni majority leader SaadHariri met overnight with chief of Lebanese Shiite armed group Hezbollah Hasan Nasrallah after over three years of political boycott between the two, Elnashra website reported Friday.

The statement distributed by Hariri's office Friday said that both leaders discussed the situation in Lebanon following the parliamentary elections on June 7 and the efforts aimed at forming a new cabinet.

"The two sides agreed during a four-hour meeting to maintain cooperation and continue dialogue as well as preserve a calm atmosphere," the statement added, but the statement did not mention the place where the meeting took place.

Nasrallah has been under strict security guarding since July 2006 Israeli-Hezbollah 34-day war.

The meeting, however, took place a day before President Michel Suleiman starts Friday afternoon the obligatory parliamentary consultations to name a new prime minister. Hariri is the most hopeful candidate for the post.

Last Thursday a similar meeting was held between Nasrallah and Druze majority leader Walid Joumblat in an attempt to ease dawn the tension which prevailed for over three years between the ruling majority and Hezbollah-led opposition.

Parliamentary elections on June 7 granted victory to the ruling majority with 71 seats, while the Hezbollah-led opposition got 57 seats.
