2007-11-30 The Dutch ambassador to Ireland, Robert Serry, has been appointed the UN's new Middle East envoy. Serry (57) will coordinate activities on the ground and represent secretary general Ban Ki-moon at international meetings.

2006-02-08 The European Commission urges EU member states to open up their labour markets to workers from Central Europe. It said Britain, Ireland and Sweden had reported increased domestic growth without higher unemployment after letting in new workers from the states which joined the EU in May 2004. However, most of the older EU member states have restricted access to their labour markets and many are considering extending the timeframe of restrictions.
