Deputy Chief of Turkish General Staff Gen. Ergin Saygun visited Baghdad at the invitation of his Iraqi counterpart, Gen. Naseer al-Abadi.
The two commanders discussed efforts to fight terrorism and long-term military cooperation between the militaries of the two countries.
Saygun also met with Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of the multinational force in Iraq, for talks on the fight against terror.
-- According to the General Staff of Turkey

"It sounds to me as if General Petraeus is presenting a plan for at least a 10-year, high-level US presence in Iraq.
I told the president that I thought on Thursday night when he spoke to the nation, that he should give an explanation for why our country should have to continue to make that commitment.
No matter how successful our troops are, still the Iraqi government refuses to make the political change necessary to end sectarian strife.”
-- Nancy Pelosi, House of Representatives Speaker

“Today we heard that the Bush administration likely intends to keep at least 130,000 troops in Iraq through next summer. U.S. national security requires that we truly and immediately change course in Iraq.”
-- Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader, a Nevada Democrat
2007-09-10
Our experience in Iraq has repeatedly shown that projecting too far into the future is not just difficult, it can be misleading and even hazardous.”
-- Gen. David H. Petraeus, the senior American commander in Iraq, in a testimony for Congress
2007-09-10
“The situation in Iraq remains complex, difficult and sometimes downright frustrating.
I also believe that it is possible to achieve our objectives in Iraq over time, although doing so will be neither quick nor easy.”
-- Gen. David H. Petraeus, the senior American commander in Iraq, in a testimony for Congress
2007-09-07
"Up front, my sense is that we have achieved tactical momentum and wrested the initiative from our enemies in a number of areas of Iraq. The result has been progress in the security arena, although it has, as you know, been uneven.
[ … ]
Many of us had hoped this summer would be a time of tangible political progress at the national level as well.
[ … ]
One of the justifications for the surge, after all, was that it would help create the space for Iraqi leaders to tackle the tough questions and agree on key pieces of 'national reconciliation' legislation. It has not worked out as we had hoped.
[ .. ]
All participants, Iraqi and coalition alike, are dissatisfied by the halting progress on major legislative initiatives.”
-- Gen. David Petraeus, U.S. commander in Iraq, in a letter to troops three days before he briefs Congress
2007-07-23
“The idea behind the surge was to bring stability and security to the Iraqi people, primarily in Baghdad because it is the political heart of the country, and by so doing give the Iraqis the time and space needed to come to grips with the tough issues they face and enable reconciliation to take place. [ ... ] If eventually the Iraqi government and the various sects and groups do not come to some sort of agreement on how to share power, on how to divide resources and on how to reconcile and stop the violence, then the assumption on which the surge strategy was based is invalid, and we would have to re-look the strategy.”
-- Col. Peter Mansoor, executive officer to General David Petraeus
2007-05-10
“What sets us apart from our enemies in this fight… is how we behave. In everything we do, we must observe the standards and values that dictate that we treat noncombatants and detainees with dignity and respect. While we are warriors, we are also all human beings”
-- General David Petraeus
2007-03-08
The new U.S. commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, said that military force would not end violence unless talks were held with some militant groups
As General Petraeus said to me and others in Iraq, the coalition there could not kill its way out of the problems of insurgency and civil strife.
-- According to David Miliband, foreign secretary of Britain, in Guardian
