"[C]limate change is not something waiting to happen. It is impacting seriously the lives of many people around the world.” The migration of people from newly uninhabitable areas presents a security issue that needs to be addressed by the United Nations Security Council. “This is one of the reasons why I've described climate change as all encompassing. [...] This threat to our health, this threat to food production, this threat to security. It raises political tensions, it will have people on the move -- and they are on the move -- and many more which will bring tensions.” -- Kofi Annan, Global Humanitarian Forum's president, former U.N. Secretary-General, speaking to CNN's Becky Anderson in London

"I don't think that there is any global warming. Environmentalism and the global warming alarmism is challenging our freedom. Al Gore is an important person in this movement. I'm afraid that the current crisis will be misused for radically constraining the functioning of the markets and market economy all around the world. I'm more afraid of the consequences of the crisis than the crisis itself." -- Vaclav Klaus, President of Czech Republic, speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum

"That's why I'm proposing today a strategic initiative designed to free us from the crises that are holding us down and to regain control of our own destiny. It's not the only thing we need to do. But this strategic challenge is the lynchpin of a bold new strategy needed to re-power America.
Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years.
This goal is achievable, affordable and transformative." -- Al Gore, speech given at the D.A.R. Constitutional Hall

"I think it is a partnership that could be very productive and fruitful for both continents not only in terms of trade and investment. We can have a partnership in global warming, clean water, technology transfer and the fight against poverty. [ ... ] With the European Union we can expand our relationship and I think that's going to be very productive." -- Alejandro Toledo, the former President of Peru, in an interview with Bloomberg Television

In Britain, ministers must in future take account of the true economic cost of climate change damage by factoring a notional "carbon price" into their calculations when making all policy and investment decisions covering transport, construction, housing, planning and energy.
The "shadow price for carbon", representing the cost to society of the environmental damage, has already been agreed for every year up to 2050 by government economists. It will be set at £25.50 a carbon tonne for 2007, rising annually to £59.60 a tonne by 2050.

Some of the reports are worrisome. But I know from experience and previous such meetings that breakthroughs, when they do occur, usually happen in the last 48 hours and sometimes in the last four to eight hours." -- Al Gore," joint Nobel Peace Prize winner, in Stockholm on his way to Bali, Indonesia.
