In Taiwan, Kuomintang, the opposition party, won 81 of 113 seats in the new legislature, giving it the power to dominate parliament and dramatically reducing the ruling Democratic Progressive party from the biggest legislative caucus to a fringe group with just 27 seats.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the United States opposed Taiwan's bid to join the United Nations at a year-end press conference. She called the referendum a "provocative policy" that "unnecessarily raises tensions in Taiwan Strait and it promises no real benefits" for the people of Taiwan on the international stage.

“Hu is a formidable rival, sharp yet merciless. He is like a smiling tiger, hiding a dagger in a smile, with honey in his mouth but a sword at his stomach.”
-- Mr. Chen Shui-bian, President of Taiwan, in a 90-minute interview

“Taiwan is an independent, sovereign country; Taiwan is not part of China, nor is Taiwan a local government of the People’s Republic of China.”
-- Mr. Chen Shui-bian, President of Taiwan, in a 90-minute interview

“It is very clear now that if we were to sign such a peace treaty under the framework of the ‘one China’ principle, then I think this would mean, for the 23 million people of Taiwan, a treaty of surrender.”
-- Mr. Chen Shui-bian, President of Taiwan, in a 90-minute interview

"Taiwan is an independent sovereign state, whose sovereignty is vested in its 23 million citizens.
Denying Taiwan's rights to participate in the United Nations and threatening Taiwan's survival in the international community are by no means a sign of progress in history, but rather, a giant step backward for civilization."
-- Chen Shui-bian, President of Taiwan, during a videoconference between the Presidential Office in Taipei and the European Parliament in Brussels

"Taiwan's overall investment in defense, approximately 2.6 percent of gross domestic product, is woefully inadequate given the ongoing tensions with mainland China.
Taiwan spends far too little on its own defense, in large part because Taiwanese believe the United States is their ultimate protector. America is now in the unenviable position of having an implicit commitment to defend a fellow democracy that seems largely uninterested in defending itself."
-- Justin Logan and Ted Galen Carpenter, Cato Institute, in a policy analysis report titled "Taiwan's Defense Budget: How Taipei's Free Riding Risks War"

Blackstone hired Anthony Leung, the former Hong Kong financial secretary, to run the group’s business in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

China’s ability to refuel its attack planes and bombers to enable them to fly farther from Chinese soil could require the United States Navy to operate even farther out to sea should the United States military be called to deal with a crisis in the Taiwan Strait. That would have an impact on the range and number of air missions of United States Navy aircraft launched from carriers.

"The depiction of Americans in media content as violent, of American women as sexually immoral and of many Americans engaging in criminal acts has brought many of these 1,313 youthful subjects to hold generally negative attitudes toward people who live in the United States."
-- Melvin and Margaret DeFleur, Louisiana State University researchers, who polled teenagers in 12 countries: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, South Korea, Mexico, China, Spain, Taiwan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Nigeria, Italy and Argentina
