Iraq was a mistake. I've said this before and I said this in the presence of Paul Wolfowitz, one of the architects of the invasion, at an IISS conference two months after the fall of Saddam Hussein, when someone asked me what will happen in Iraq. In October 2002, I was in Washington and became quite convinced an invasion would take place. On the way home, I stopped in London and asked Tony Blair to brief me. After 45 minutes, I said, "Look I accept the argument that with British and American military capabilities it would be a walk over, but then what do you do the day after?
-- Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's Minister Mentor, interviewed by Arnaud de Borchgrave

"There is a huge gap between his rhetoric and his capabilities.
[ ... ]
Too often, he is unaware of the limits imposed on him by reality. The idea of humanitarian intervention is wonderful, until you start trying to apply it in practice.
[ ... ]
His ideas are attractive, but he never thought through the relationship between words and deeds. He has not discovered the difference between politics and policy."
-- Sir Rodric Braithwaite, former diplomatic adviser to John Major and UK ambassador to Moscow, reflecting on Tony Blair's years as Prime Minister
2007-05
"He [= Tony Blair] set out hoping he could end the psycho-drama of Britain's relations with Europe, and that as a result he could be the leader of an outward-looking, self-confident European Union, sharing leadership with the US.
[ ... ]
Unhappily, his damaging relationship with [President George W.] Bush - and like almost everybody associated with this administration, he has gone down as a result - destroyed his ability to shape the European agenda."
-- Chris Patten, former European commissioner for external affairs and now chancellor of Oxford University
2007-01
“Globalisation begets interdependence, and interdependence begets the necessity of a common value system to make it work”
-- Tony Blair, “A Battle for Global Values”, Tony Blair, in his article for Foreign Affairs, January/February 2007

United Nations chief Kofi Annan and UK PM Tony Blair suggest sending an international force in Lebanon to halt the Hezbollah attacks.
Israel says it is too soon to consider such a move.
2006-06-26
"Anybody who cares about greater peace and stability in the world knows that a lasting and enduring resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian issue is essential."
"And I will do whatever I can to help such a resolution come about."
-- Tony Blair talking about the possibility of becoming Mid East envoy for the Quartet
2005-08
In Britain, Tariq Ramadan was appointed to a panel advising Prime Minister Tony Blair on Islamic matters.

'C [Sir Richard Dearlove, head of MI6] reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. The NSC [the US National Security Council] had no patience with the UN route and no enthusiasm for publishing material on the Iraqi regime's record. There was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action.'
Matthew Rycroft in a memo to his boss, Sir David Manning, Blair's chief foreign policy adviser regarding a secret meeting at Downing Street which included Tony Blair, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon, Sir Richard Dearlove, the head of MI6, John Scarlett, the head of the Joint Intelligence Committee, Lord Goldsmith, the Attorney General, and Blair's military chiefs and the sofa cabinet - Alastair Campbell, Sally Morgan and Jonathan Powell.
Note:
The memo was written in 2002
